Three foot passing law in effect 07/01/2014

SB97, known as the three foot passing rule, is in effect in Virginia on July 1st, 2014.  This is great news for any non-vehicle traffic in Virginia, be they cyclist, equestrian, jogger etc...  From the bill:

"Any driver of any vehicle overtaking a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, moped, animal, or animal-drawn vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass at a reasonable speed at least two three feet to the left of the overtaken bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, moped, animal, or animal-drawn vehicle and shall not again proceed to the right side of the highway until safely clear of such overtaken bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, moped, animal, or animal-drawn vehicle."

Clearly, as our population grows bills like this will help ease friction.  Although all cyclists have had negative experiences with automobile drivers (and automobile drivers problems with cyclists) there has certainly been a trend towards acceptance of alternate road users.  I have noticed much more understanding and patience out there on the roads lately, and as the population grows we all need to be vigilant in how we drive, ride, run and otherwise interact with our neighbors.  Be safe out there!
