Map of James' 2014 Andes Trail Adventure

Our friend James Hodges has just departed for Quito, Ecuador where he will begin an amazing once-in-a-lifetime bicycle adventure along the length of the Andes mountains from the equator to Ushuaia, the southern most city on the globe. The route spans a whopping 11,000 kilometers (nearly 6,875 miles) and traverses Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and the legendary Patagonia and finally Chile. The whole ride takes 136 days and ends on December 14, 2014. And if those stats didn't impress you, maybe this fact will: James is attempting this undertaking at 63 years of age. His grit and determination plus years of long-distance cycling experience makes him the perfect candidate for the mission. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to support James on this incredible excursion.

An amazing feat as this one needed an equally amazing bike up to the challenges of such a varied terrain. We knew Orbea's Alma family of mountain bikes would be just the right match for the length, duration, elevation and extreme nature of the course. His chosen steed is the Alma H10, a hydro aluminum frame with a Fox fork, Shimano XT components and hydraulic disc brakes. The Alma is just as at home on the trail as it is on the racecourse and has been labelled the "working man's racer". It is lightweight, efficient and reliable.

We will also post photos and updates of his journey as we receive them.

Also helping James stay comfortable and well-outfitted during his ride is Endura who provided some critical pieces of technical cycling apparel including bibs, jerseys, gloves and glasses. The award winning FS260-Pro line is designed for long distances in the saddle (no kidding!) during training or racing and offer benefits such as supportive, fast wicking panels, antibacterial gel chamois and SPF 50 sun protection. FS260-Pro jerseys also offer coldblack technology, which dramatically reduces heat buildup during prolonged efforts.

On behalf of James (who is busy spinning the pedals at the moment) we'd like to thank Orbea Bicycles as well as Endura Clothing for their generous support of James' grand adventure and many other cyclists and racers around the world with grand adventures of their own. Both companies embody exactly the kind of spirit of adventure that drives folks like James to ride their bikes to the ends of the earth and beyond.

Happy adventuring to you all!
